Sugar and Studying!

12/05/2022

You probably already know that too much sugar is bad for you. Since we were children we’ve been told that sugar can “rot your teeth”, and can lead to obesity, diabetes, hyperactivity etc.  But there is one lethal effect of sugar that may come as a shock to you: SUGAR SLOWS DOWN YOUR BRAIN! Sugar hinders your ability to form new memories and can also lead to an increased risk for long term conditions such as dementia. It has the ability to lower concentration, suppress the immune system, cause hyperactivity, weaken eyesight, link to diabetes, ignite sleep disorders, worsen digestion, and more.

We know that we can find sugar in candy, ice cream and treats.  But lately it seems that sugar pops up in almost EVERYTHING we put into our mouths (or our children)! Sugar can be really sneaky. We’re here to let you know the unexpected places that pack a sugary punch!

Sugar is added to foods like tomato sauce, dried fruit, granola bars, flavored water, cereal, apple sauce, canned vegetables, canned soups, and more. This may come as a surprise as sugar has many aliases. It can be hidden behind names like starch, dextrose, glucose, maltose, corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup and fruit juice. Rude, we know!

So if you are wondering why your child is having trouble learning, focusing or completing assignments, try reading the labels. Keep an eye out for sneaky sugar in the pantry, refrigerator or their lunchbox. Look beyond the obvious. You may uncover more sugar than you thought!
